The Blouse Piece: What Comes With the Saree

Unstitched, not ready to wear

A blouse piece is a length of matching fabric supplied with the saree so that a blouse can be made from it. It arrives flat and unstitched. It is not a finished garment, and it is not cut to your measurements — a tailor does that part.

Kopoi's organza and mulmul sarees each include an unstitched matching blouse piece of approximately 0.8 metres. That is the standard allowance and is enough for a regular blouse for most builds; an elaborate design with long sleeves or heavy detailing may need more fabric than the piece provides.

What to give your tailor

Take the blouse piece and, if you have one, a blouse that already fits you — copying an existing fit is faster and more reliable than measuring from scratch. Decide the neck and sleeve shape before cutting, because 0.8 metres does not leave much room to change your mind.

Pairing a blouse with organza

Organza is sheer and holds its shape, so it drapes better against a blouse with some structure to it. A structured blouse, metallic or statement jewellery, and otherwise minimal accessories let the painted work stay the focal point rather than competing with it.

Pairing a blouse with mulmul cotton

Mulmul is lighter and less formal, so it carries a sleeveless blouse, or a linen or cotton crop top, without looking underdressed. Silver jewellery and flats keep it in daytime territory; block heels and bolder earrings lift the same drape into something more formal.

Do the saree lengths matter here?

The blouse piece is separate from the drape itself. Kopoi's sarees are approximately 5.5 metres long and about 44 inches (112 cm) wide, which is standard, and the 0.8 metre blouse piece is supplied in addition to that rather than cut from it.
